In an article recorded in Auto Express, the government has revealed that 8% of fully qualified instructors had been marked down as sub-standard. That represents 4,182 instructors from the articles stated 52,272 on the register. Although figures given to me from the DSA suggest there are around 47,000 instructors, this still leaves 3,760 who are below standard. The figures quoted also show that more than half have only just met the standard. The grading of Driving Instructors is from 1 to 6 with 6 being the highest. A Driving Instructor will usually be graded at their check test, (test of continued ability to instruct), and this occurs roughly every 4 years. Grades can be seen below with the DSA grading criteria.
Driving Instructors should be looking to increase their grade at each check test and can take additional training to help them with this. Unfortunately very few do resulting in the poor figures we see. Less than 6% of instructors are believed to be the highest grade 6.
You can check your instructor’s grade by asking to see their last check test certificate. All 1st 4 Driving instructor take further training to ensure they not only meet standards but exceed them. Each not only sign up to the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) but agree to the 1st 4 Driving promise to each and every one of their pupils. Eddie Stobart cleaned up the image of the road haulage industry and 1st 4 Driving intend to do the same for the Driving Instructor Profession.
